B.O.O.K.S. consists of small group workshops for parents of preschool children focusing on reading, listening, talking and writing. Parents discuss and borrow children’s books and prepare crafts to share with their children. The program has been adapted to work with Aboriginal and immigrant organizations.

The program:

Parents and a workshop leader meet weekly for 4-8 weeks They read and share good quality children’s books They talk about ideas and themes in books They do crafts and writing activities around a story's theme They write stories for their children They take books home to share

Parents and children read more together Children develop language and early literacy skills Families have fun sharing books Parents gain skills and feel more confident helping their children Parents’ interest grows in their own reading and writing
