Introduction to Family Literacy Regional Training

Brief Description:

This 2-day workshop provides participants with a basic understanding of the role of literacy in the life of children, their parents and the community.

Topics that are explored include the following:

A short history of literacy
How literacy is perceived today
Adult literacy
Family Literacy
The role of oral language in children’s literacy development
Emergent (early) literacy development
The role of environmental print in emergent literacy development
Parental role in emergent literacy development

The workshop provides participants with many opportunities to be actively involved in examining and developing strategies to support family literacy activities. A manual is provided to all participants.
